“The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you. Don’t go back to sleep.”
— Rumi, The Essential Rumi, translated by Coleman Barks.
In spiritual traditions, the idea of “awakening” often sounds lofty or esoteric. Rather, it is more like a breeze at dawn. It is the simple yet profound moment when one begins to hear the secrets from the soul and to understand the soul’s guidance.
Each of us will experience at least one awakening in every lifetime, yet many drift back to sleep instead of staying awake to its call.
We often move through life without realizing the deeper meaning behind our struggles, choices, and turning points. Awakening happens when those experiences stop feeling random, and we start to recognize them as part of a larger design — a path set forth by the soul for our growth.
Awakening often begins with simple but profound questions: Is there something greater than myself? Is there a higher purpose to my existence? The moment we start asking such questions, we are already in the process of awakening — because this curiosity is a sign that we are searching for a greater truth. Even those who may not think in spiritual terms can feel this stirring.
Once we begin asking such questions, we awaken our consciousness to the voice of the soul, which speaks to us in dreams, in repeating patterns, or in a persistent intuition. True awakening is learning to listen to that quiet guidance — often as gentle and insistent as that breeze at dawn.
Awakening is sometimes a single event, or it can be a gradual unfolding. It marks the point where we stop living only from the thoughts or desires of the mortal — driven by habit, fear, or appearances — and begin to live from the inner guidance of the wisdom of the soul.
If you are experiencing an awakening, remember Rumi’s words: “Don’t go back to sleep.” Stay present, keep listening, and let the wisdom of the soul continue to guide you forward.
Grow in peace and go in light.
